More than 11,000 women die due to cervical cancer every year in Bangladesh. Cervical cancer has hardly any symptom at an early stage when it is completely treatable. Most of the patients seek for aid at a stage when the cancer has already spread throughout the body. Therefore, early detection is necessary to cure and prevent the disease. The situation is worse in hard-to-reach areas where women do not easily get any access to health services, let alone gain information about cervical cancer.

A monograph titled “Friendship Centre,” on the project Friendship Centre by architect Kashef Chowdhury, was formally launched on Saturday at Radisson Blu Water Garden in Dhaka.

LUXEMBOURG CITY • Had it not been for the floating hospitals cruising the Brahmaputra river region in northern Bangladesh and providing free basic medical care, most of the area's inhabitants might never have had the chance to come face to face with a doctor.
And many might not even be alive today.

"More specifically, (those living along) a stretch of around 250km in that region," explains Mr Marc Elvinger from the Luxembourg Friendship branch. "Up to 10,000 people live on each of the approximately 400 islands."

ভবনের বিভিন্ন কক্ষের ছাদ মাটির সমতলে। তাতে লাগানো সবুজ ঘাস মিশে গেছে আশপাশের মাঠের সঙ্গে। গাইবান্ধার ফুলছড়ি উপজেলার কঞ্চিপাড়া ইউনিয়নের মদনেরপাড়া গ্রামে ফ্রেন্ডশিপ সেন্টার নামক এই ভবনের দিকে সবাই অবাক হয়ে তাকায়। প্রকৃতির মধ্যে মিশে যেন অদৃশ্য হয়ে আছে কমপ্লেক্সটি।

‘এদিকে তো আগে ডাকাতি হতো, এখন হয়?’
‘আমরা ডাকাতি করি না, কিন্তু ডাকাতের নৌকা চিনি। ওই ঘাটেই তো ছিল কয়েকটা।’
কথাটা শুনে একটু ভয়ই হলো। এই নৌকাও যে তাদের না, তা কী করে বুঝব? বগুড়া শহরের পূর্বে সারিয়াকান্দি। একসময় খুব ভাঙত। হয়তো নদীভাঙা মানুষদেরই কেউ কেউ ডাকাতিকে পেশা হিসেবে নিয়েছিল। যমুনার ডাকাতেরা বেশ জবরদস্ত। গত বছর সাপধরী ইউনিয়নে ডাকাতির সময় তিনজনকে গুলি করে। তার আগের বছর চরবাটিয়ার সাতটি বাড়ি থেকে ২৮টি গরু ও টাকাপয়সা নিয়ে যায়। আহত হয় সাতজন।

DAKATIA CHAR, DEWANGANJ, BANGLADESH—The day a white and pale blue floating hospital docked on the silty shores of this remote island, the women dared to hope their luck was about to change.

A team of foreign doctors, they had been told, would arrive to treat women and children disfigured by burns — fingers gnarled, faces deformed, legs and arms covered with ropy scars and burn contractures.
