News Today: Reaching legal aid services to grass root level underscored

Our Correspondent GAIBANDHA, April 27: Speakers in a function here underscored the need for reaching the legal aid services to the people of grass root level including the remote char areas here for protecting their fundamental rights. They also expressed their view that only the judiciary isn't capable to ensure legal aid services to the underprivileged and disadvantage people of the society but concerned efforts of all quarters including NGO are urgent need to ensure access to justice of the distressed people. They came up with the comments while addressing a view sharing meeting between the members of district legal aid committee (DLAC) and the representatives of Friendship, a national reputed NGO, at the conference room of district judgeship of the town here very recently. The objective of the meeting was how to strengthen and ensure legal aid services to the hard to reach char people here to have a better society through active participation of all the concerned. Ratneswar Bhattacharja, district judge of Nari o Shishu Nirjatan Daman Tribunal, addressed the meeting as the chief guest and additional district judge M. Shariful Islam, chief judicial magistrate M. Shahidullah and police super Ashraful Islam were present as the special guests. With Barrister Ayesha Taasin Khan, director of legal compliance and head of good governance project of Friendship, in the chair, the function was also addressed, among others, by district legal aid officer and senior assistant judge Rawshan Alam, and government pleader Hafijur Rahman and manager of the project Abu Muhammad Shihab. Earlier, overall activities of Friendship and the legal aid service programme for the char people were presented by team leader Ahmed Toufiqur Rahman and lawyer of the organization M. Moniruzzaman respectively through multimedia projector. District judge Ratneswar Bhattacharja in his speeches said entire people of the society are equal to the eye of the law so emphasis should be given on bringing all the victimized people under the legal aid services whatever and whenever they need. Barrister Ayesha Taasin Khan in her concluding speeches said as the government is committed to provide legal aid services to the poor and distressed people; she sought whole hearted cooperation of all the members of the DLAC to make the legal aid services in the chars a grand success. All the members of the DLAC and the officials of good governance e project of Friendship including journalists took part in the meeting.
